Is your adopted child about to start school or nursery?  Remember Pupil Premium!

When your child is aged 3-4, their Early Years education provider can access the Early Years Pupil Premium Support, which is an additional £353 of funding per year and it can be used to enhance your child’s learning.

Once they are in the school of their choice, every adopted child (Reception to Year 11) gets a Pupil Premium of £2,630 (2025-26). This is additional education funding to help meet their needs. Whilst this money is not ring-fenced to their sole needs, it must be evidenced that the money is used to support the right children in the school.

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is a form of additional government funding provided to state schools in England to support the education of previously looked-after children, including adopted children.

  • What is the amount? Around £2,630 per year per eligible child (2025-26 funding).
  • Who is eigibile? Children adopted from care are entitled to the funding until the end of Year 11.
  • Who receives it? The school receives the funding, not the parents or child directly.
  • What is it’s purpose? It’s meant to help close the attainment gap between vulnerable children and their peers by funding targeted support.

Please note: You do not need to apply for Pupil Premium – you just need to make sure your school is aware!

Adoptive parents must inform the school before the October census (and provide proof of the Adoption Order if requested) to trigger the funding — schools won’t know otherwise.
